Active Duty: 1948–1952

Known as “Jerry,” Jeremiah J. Doran, Jr. proudly served in the United States Navy. He began his service aboard the aircraft carrier USS Siboney as a Quartermaster before transferring to the heavy cruiser USS Des Moines, where he served in the Mediterranean as a Signalman.

While aboard the USS Des Moines, Jerry oversaw the Signal Bridge, top rigging, the Flag Locker, and flag maintenance—critical responsibilities supporting naval communication and operations.

In 1951, during the establishment of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) under General Dwight D. Eisenhower, a command flag had not yet been created. When Eisenhower planned a visit to the USS Des Moines, flagship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet under Vice Admiral Ballentine, Jerry and his fellow crew members improvised. With no green bunting available, they sourced green felt from a French pool table and quickly crafted the SHAPE flag. Eisenhower was so impressed that he took the flag with him as a souvenir upon departure.

Following his military service, Jerry built a distinguished career in accounting and taxation. He remained deeply committed to his community and to fellow veterans, serving multiple terms as Commander of the American Legion and maintaining affiliations with the VFW, Moose Lodge, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He consistently gave his time and energy to helping others.

Jerry had a passion for music, especially singing Irish tunes in pubs across Ireland. Known for his remarkable memory and gift for storytelling, he connected easily with people from all walks of life and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Guided by a philosophy of “service above self,” Jerry lived a life of generosity and purpose. He will be greatly missed. Let us not be in sorrow that he is no more, but be thankful that he was.

Jerry, thank you for your service to our country
